Creating Clear Concise Content

Creating clear concise content your ideal customers will connect with.

Writing website content is often one of the biggest struggles my clients face. Far to many of them come to me in hopes that I can create clear concise content that perfectly captures who they are, what they do and what they have to offer, with little to no input. So here is what I tell them…

No one can share what your business is about quite like you, so the content needs to come from you!

It doesn’t have to be perfect and polished, but it needs to have a clear vision that represents your business. Once you have that, there are incredible copy Editors out there, like my good friend Betty Hilliard with Mainstay Editorial Services, that can help you perfect and polish your content.

But this can only happen when you get the ball rolling by defining who you are, what you do, and what you have to offer.

So this week I am going to be sharing tips for creating clear concise content. Starting with my #1 rule in website design…

Each page on your website needs to have a single focus!

In order to communicate clearly and effectively with your clients each page on your website needs to have a single focus.  And that focus must be clear immediately. I personally use the 5 second rule… Each time a visitor comes to any web page I have created they must be able to understand the purpose of that page in 5 seconds or less.

So with that in mind let’s take a moment to define the purpose for each page on your website. (If you haven’t defined what pages you need just yet, I suggest you check out my post Website Brainstorming for a little help and guidance.)

Here is a quick look at common pages and the single focus for each of those pages.

  • Home page ~ an overview of who you are, what you do, and how you do it.
  • About page ~ a more in depth look at your story and why you are doing what you do
  • Contact page ~ how you can be reached and when are you available
  • Testimonials ~ how you have impacted the lives of others
  • Services ~ if you have a single service you offer, give the specifics of what that service includes. If you have multiple services, give a brief description and then link to more detailed pages for each service.
  • Products ~ list of products available and descriptions for each. If greater detail is needed to describe each product individual product pages may be necessary.
  • Blog/Tips ~ List of your posts with the most recent at the top.
  • Lead Magnet (freebie) ~ What are they getting and how to get it

A little bit about Teresa...

Hello! I am so glad you are here, and I am excited for this chance to tell you a little bit more about me! I am an accidental web designer who found this dream job totally by accident! (Isn't it great when that happens!) And now I have the pleasure of spending most of my days building gorgeous websites through Squarespace and WordPress. I also have a couple of amazing grown up kids, 4 dogs, 3 cats and 9 chickens! And when I am not geeking out of some new design, you can find me hanging out in southeast South Dakota.
